Contrary to your assertion that Magic Hat is universally known, I have never had a Magic Hat product, have never seen it on draught or on the shelf and certainly would not automatically associate "#9" with that brewery.

or maybe you just don't know very much about beer? There's no Magic Hat sold in San Diego either, but I'm well aware of the brewery and honestly think most people into beer would associate #9 with the Magic Hat beer
I associate #9 with Duggan's Brewery.

Exactly! Georgetown doesn't even use the # symbol on their beer. The ONLY thing they have in common is the number.

The 9lb Hammer is one of Seattle's oldest bars, and is a long standing tradition and icon here. They've been brewing the 9lb Porter in their honor for years. This is a huge douche move.

This was the exact beer that came to mind when I read the email from Georgetown. The "collaboration" is fantastic, and the writeup that goes with it is just as good. As to comments about #9 vs 9 LB, I will be the first to say that it is very common to see a bar or restaurant list it as 9# Porter... but please... give the freaking consumer some credit for brains. There is a huge difference between an apricot infused wheat beer and a porter. Not to mention, Georgetown does not bottle, so you will never see it in grocery stores, etc., the logos look nothing alike, etc. There are so many reasons why this was just a jerk move on the part of Magic Hat and their founder.

I am well aware of Magic Hat, living here in Seattle, though I know of no place in the area where you can purchase it, and have only tried it because my awesome sister in law brings me beer from back east when they come to visit. As to other #9 beers, another that comes quickly to mind is Baltika

And Magic Hat isn't the only company doing this. Bear Republic is also involved in legal action over Red Racer:

Because it apparently got confused with their beer by three people.lol

A little surprised by Magic Hat. Not a huge fan of their beer, except the #9 which is good once in a while. I don't think they have a huge case but I'm sure the money to fight this would be too much to follow through.

I'm a fan of their facebook page but will probably remove it. I've been ignoring their posts anyways since they only post Beatles lyrics or funny little hippie quips.
