Review of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout

Sat Mar 06, 2010 11:35 am

Here is a stout that I wish I could mimic. Hopefully someday I'll be brewing beer that is as good as this stuff. I really enjoyed this beer and I was wondering if anyone else has tried it. What is your take on it?

I really enjoyed it. what year did you try? I have a bunch of '08 aging in my basement. the last Bourbon Stout I made I based off a RIS and has some similarities to Goose Island's, but not close enough.

Tried 2009. The more I talk to people about this particular beer the more they tell me I should have held onto a bottle. I can see why. It was powerful from the start. I bet that mellows out a little bit as time goes on and you can enjoy even more flavor instead of a kick in the teeth!

I got a four pack December 08. Took a sip and said, "Hot Damn that's good and YOUNG!" I decided to forget about it for a year and last Christmas tried it again. Took a sip and said, "Oh, baby that's nice."

It needed time, when it was young, it was an vanilla and oak bomb and pretty boozy. After a year, the malts came forward and blended well with the oak and vanilla, so so nice. If it didn't cost so much, I'd probably end up being 400lbs divorced and unemployed.

I'm thinking I may go out and grab another 4 pack and stash it for a rainy day.

Hmm. This could be a good thing to put on my birthday list!

Thanks for the review. I saw that on the shelf when I drove to Omaha last week. Looked pretty pricey for something I didn't know was any good or not. I'll have to pick up a 4 pack or two next time I get to the city.

This is a totally awesome beer. Very complex, dark, chocolaty, roasted, some vanilla notes and hints of oak. A very well done beer, IMO! Cheers to Goose Island for making this wonderful creation.
Enjoy Great Beer!

Had it again this weekend. It is good, but I really want to get some and let it sit around for a few years.

It is actually suggested to age for 5 years before opening. How the heck can anyone expect me to do that? LOL

If you pick up a four pack, stash two away for a rainy day or when you know your going to have time just sitting around in the garage or something.
