Using Gelatin in a Conical

Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:41 am

I have access to a free fridge that will hold my 14 gallon blichmann conical. I ferment for 14 days and use C02 to push the beer to my kegs. I would crash cool, add Gelatin and let it sit for 5-7 days and re-keg to fresh kegs. I would like to try and eliminate the first round of kegs by crash cooling the conical and add Gelatin for 5-7 days and then keg clear beer to fresh kegs. This would eliminate the first round of kegs. Can this be done? I would remove as much yeast as I can before adding the Gelatin.

Thanks,

Yes. I add gelatin to my conical all the time. It isn't a fancy schmancy Blichmann conical, but it works for me.

Thanks Dirk. This is one of the reasons I bought the Blichmann. Ferment, drop the yeast and add Gelatin. The only thing I don't like to do is I have to take the lid off to stir the Gelatin in the finished beer. Maybe I could swish it around by removing the cornie lid. Would this work?

Last time, I just poured the gelatin through the hole for the airlock and sealed 'er back up. I figured the gelatin will distribute itself and reach equilibrium in the solution without me having to risk contamination with a spoon, or back surgery from lifting and shaking. I could be wrong. I often am.
