Two clay pots are nested with a relatively thin layer of sand between them. The sand is watered twice daily, and the inner pot, which is lidded, is cooled by evaporation.

Seems like a $5 keg tub and ice (added twice daily) would still be a better option than finding two large porous pots and sand to water (twice daily)...

depends on how readily available water and ice are

don't get me wrong, i'm sticking with my chest freezer + temp controller, but i thought i'd throw this out there for new folks looking for a cheap way to improve temperature stability.

This could work but I think you could have issues in more humid areas. Same is true with the wet towel in a tray of water, acting like a wick, and a small fan.
