Looking for a good grain bill for my first IPA

Fri Jul 10, 2009 6:52 am

Howdy,

I need to clear my freezer of excess hops, so it is time to brew an IPA. I have been scouring the net to find a decent grain bill but Im not sure how to pick a good one. Any suggestions?

Also, I have a 1/2 oz of the following hops: German Magnum, Colombus, Summit, Cascade, Centennial, Horizon and Fuggle. Can someone tell me if their might be any flavor clashes were I to use all of them?

Thanks,

Stay Funky,

~FunkEnet~

Fermenting:

Look at the latest edition of Zymurgy. Vinnie from Russian River has an article in there about brewing a double IPA (Pliney Clone), you could dial it down for your malt bill. I can't wait to give that one a try.

JimBob,

Is that the "Brewing Green Beer" issue or have they come out with another one?

I like my IPA grain bills to be simple.

80-85% American 2 row
5-10% Crystal 40
5-10% Crystal 60
5% Flaked Wheat for head retention. Take it or leave it.

Nice and clean. Gives good color with a hint of sweetness. Lets your hops shine.

Fermenting: Last Paycheck IPA, Hedgehog Pale Ale Test Batch 007

Here's a recipe to take a look at. I've won some comps with this and variations of it.
