better bottle is toast

Sat Jun 20, 2009 5:48 am

I lost two better bottles today. Last night, after bottling beers, I tilted the better bottle on its side to run water in it from the spigot in the bath tub. Repeat for the other better bottle. This morning both better bottles were cracked and leaking on the bottom. I think the weight of water in the better bottles while tilted on their side made them crack. Now I wanted to brew today and I think the LHBS only has bucket fermenters. Should I buy the bucket for a fermentation vessel. If I don't, I'll be waiting to brew until probably two weeks from now due to shipping another fermenter from norther brewer.

That sucks about the Better Bottles.

I think that you would be fine with a fermentation bucket. The big concern is infections resulting from scratches in the plastic. As long as you are careful while cleaning it, you shouldn't have any problems.

Also, it's been quite a while since I've been there, but I think that the Ithaca Beer Co. used to sell glass carboys.

Contact Better BOttles and let them know. I read on another forum of someone contacting them after they lost a better bottle and they sent him a new one free of charge.

+1 on contacting better bottle.

If it's either buy a bucket or wait 2 weeks, I say get the bucket.

+1 There are many dividends to making friends with the local breweries. The least of which is free yeast and possibly cheap equipment.

Definately contact the Better Bottle company. We have had one or two problems with them in our local club, and the company has replaced them.

Just be careful with plastic buckets, and you should be fine. Scratches and flavor memory are the two downfalls of the bucket, but they can be managed.

Good luck!
