Hello from St. Louis

Hi folks,
I suppose next time in the chat room I'll use the handle "codewritinfool" since that pretty well describes me.

I've been brewing for a little over a year but come from a long line of brewers (not that that helps any).

When I mentioned to my almost 80-year-old Dad that I was really interested in brewing he told me that down in the corner of his basement was his old bottle capper and some bottles & caps. Huh? He then told me that he used to brew all of the time. My Mom started telling stories about it and I just couldn't believe it. Here I could have been brewing as a kid and didn't even know it.

He then told me that his father brewed, his father's father brewed, and his great-grandmother brewed. Cool.

The next part is the best. He fumbled around in some old papers and produced my great-great-grandmother's beer recipe, more than 100 years old! (No, it doesn't look that good, really).

The show is fantastic and I look forward to it every week (don't know what I'm going to do this week!). I've met some cool folks on here, like Krotch for example.

Hey, welcome to the forum. I'm hoping you'll post that 100-year old recipe so we can all get a look at it. Whaddaya say?

Please email me the recipe if you get a chance:

What a great beer story that is, we will definitely have to plug that on the show. You should call in on our next show, and share with other listeners the story of beer in your family. 888-401-2337 (BEER)

I mailed scans of it to Jon already, but here goes:

Homebrew

1 can of hop malt
1 cake of compressed yeast.
2 pounds sugar to make.
use 6 gallon jar in making.

Have ready one gallon boiling water. Put sugar in crock, stir until thoroughly dissolved. Then add malt and stir until thoroughly dissolved. Add enough cold water to make 5 gallons. Dissolve yeast in cup of luke warm water. Pour slowly in jar. Stir for 10 minutes. Cover securely, set in cool place for 36 hours. Then skim well all substances from top. Dissolve 1/2 cup of sugar in cold water. Pour slowly in jar. Bottle and let stand 24 hours. 48 hours is better.
