Actually, I'm not an ALEien, I'm a Citizen :asshat: I'm a member of Lehigh Valley Homebrewers.

What I'm surprised about is that Monk's is available places OTHER than Monk's for a while now... I thought they had an exclusive contract to serve it only in-house, but I guess not. It has another name on RateBeer anyway (Bios Vlaamse Bourgogne)

I was surprised to see someone suggest Monk's Sour Ale (absolutely fantastic beer and one that got me into sours recently). Nice to see another SE PA brewer out there Nate. I'm in Manayunk. I think I saw you're an ALEien, no? I'd love to join that club, but the meetings are just too far away for me I think.

Media here, working on City Line. I'm looking into becoming an ALEien. But as for the two suggested +1 I would also suggest Ommegang 3 Philosophers is a great intro to starters. Monk's Cafe Red f-in awesome. I must have put back like 6 of them the other day without thinking.

Rodenbach, Rodenbach Grand Cru, Any Jolly Pumpkin, Gueuze Girardin are good places to start. I'd stay away from Duchess, it's too sweet and might turn you off. Go with some of the dryer ones listed above. (although, Rodenbach is fairly sweet too)

The Monk's Cafe sour red is excellent as is the Rodenbach Grand Cru. I had a Lindeman's Kriek a few weeks ago. Don't waste your time. They really sold out. It reminds me of cough syrup. The Cassis is great, though.

I have do disagree with this one, I thought that the Duchess was a wonderful beer.

+1 on New Belgium La Folie - drinking my first one right now... this sucker will make your butt cheeks pucker...

And I will in turn disagree with you. Duchess is way too sweet, though it is still decent. It is not as bad as Monk's is, though. La Folie is better than either by a very large margin. And to my palate, I found The Dissident more complex than La Folie. You want butt cheek pucker? Go Cantillon or go home :)

Monk's has been available here in AZ for the past 2 years at least.

and I will in turn sort of agree with you and kind of disagree with myself.

Duchess is an ok beer, but not to start with. I think the dry sour beers are easier to wrap your head around. Then once you acquire a taste for the sour, dive the duchess a try ... and bask in her sacharin sweetness :) ;)
