Blond Ale--Third times the charm

Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:55 am

Ok, 2 AG batches, 2 failures. No biggie. I'm brand new and prepared for mistakes. So, I brewed last night completely hammered and without pants.

9lbs 2 Row
1lb Crystal 10
1oz Willamette 5.0% at 60
.5oz Willamette 5.0% at 15
WLP011 with starter.

Stayed within style guidelines. This is a first for me. SG and OG were a little higher than I was shooting for even though I was within guidelines. I need to start topping off with more water to boil volume.

SG: 1.044
OG: 1.053
SRM: 5.9
IBU: 22
Eff: 74%

This was also the first time I could taste the hops in the OG sample. I was very pleased with that and I really enjoy the Willamette.

Pitched at 68° and put her in the freezer at 68° (taped and insulated of course). In the freezer at about 10:30 last night. Had EXCELLENT aeration finally and this morning at 6:30, she was bubbling away with a nice foamy layer.

I'm approaching this batch as if I'd never had any success on extract batches.
Primary: Nada Damn Thing IPA
Secondary: ESB
Kegged: Jack Schittenweiss
