Chiller question

Fri Mar 13, 2009 9:29 am

so, I won the chiller on the Sunday Session show this past sunday. I didn't hear the show live and I can't find on the homepage exactly what I won, but I know it's a Jamil Whirlpool Chiller?

My question is this. I'm still brewing extract and I've got 6 batches under my belt so I'm still new at this. I brew in a converted keg and my dip tube goes straight into the keg and then...dips down to the very bottom. I've never whirlpooled before, but I thing I understand that it means using your paddle to whirl the wort around before transferring from the kettle to the frementation device to allow all the bits to collect in the center so you don't transfer them.

In order for this new device to work so I need to change my dip tube so that it no longer collects from the middle of the keg, but rather from along the side somehow?

I'm confused and would like to get the best use out of this thing that I can. I think I've also heard people mentioning needing a pump for this? I don't have a pump, but have, for some reason, a desire to have one. My buddies use the wort wizzard to get the work from the kettle to the carboy and it's cool and all, but it's no pump.

The chiller you won is a regular chiller with an additional piece of copper added so you can recirculate hot wort back into the brew kettle, effectivly dropping the temp very quickly. You will need a pump to recirculate and you should adjust or change you dip tube so it's moved from the center of the kettle out to the edge. You can, however, use the chiller without recirculation and without modifying your dip tube. It'll just take a little longer to cool the wort.

Very cool. I've already built an IC. I may get a pump and a little more tubing and add the whirlpool.

I swear I'm not really this fucking stupid.

Now I need a pump I guess, but I can still use the chiller without the recurculation part and the pump until I get a pump right?

about modifying my dip tube, can I just buy a short piece of flexible copper tube and bend it around the inner idameter of the keg?

I'm thinking I've heard that it's nearly impossible to find bendable copper tubing in short pieces so if that's the case, can I just fashion one up using my trusty torch, solder and several different angle bend pieces?
