BJCP Class Question

Thu Jan 29, 2009 6:45 pm

I brewed this beer and I am pretty happy with it, but wanted to get some additional feedback. My friends and wife give me a smile and an "it's Good", but then return to Bud Light or Newcastle. My question is this...where do I enter this thing. It doesn't really fall into any styles per se, so I was thinking of entering it into Category 23, which is Specialty Beer. The recipe is below. It is "Fire In The Hole" from Morebeer. Thanks for any feedback.

At 1 BU/GU, that's a bit too big and too hoppy for an American Amber. I think you'd have to go specialty on that one.

This is a tough question. This beer is similar to Denny's RIPA. I have tasted Taboots beer. I think Specialty is your best bet but I think you could try American IPA too. The probably with the specialty is that nothing stands out and slaps you in the face. The specialty beers are going to be a lot of different stuff. When I have entered the RIPA it placed in Specialty and made it to the second round of the NHC so that is where it should go, but just know that is a tough category.

It would be pretty sweet to place, but I am hoping to get some good feedback. I have that and an APA that I am going to send off to the Babble Brew-Off, which is based in Mundelein, IL. I have never heard of the place, but I like the name of it.

Rule of thumb about placing an entry. Think from a judge's perspective. If I was handed this beer as an "X" regular style (IPA, for instance) would I find characters out of place with what I expect from the style. If the beer has an obvious taste (like the rye being noticeable) that doesn't belong, off to Specialty with it!
