Measuring stick

Tue Jan 13, 2009 6:41 pm

I have a new kettle and need to make a measuring stick to monitor the kettle volume. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use and how to mark it? I have large plastic spoon but haven't found a way to mark it that will hold up to the water.

I use a length of 1/2" copper pipe that I have marked with one pass of the cutting wheel.

That sounds like it would work much better. Do you actually cut a notch all the way thru one side of the pipe or just make a mark?

I used a 1/2" oak dowel from HD or Lowes....marked it every half gallon, and burned in the lines with a soldering iron.

I have a metal spoon that I notched the edge of. At 15 minutes before flame out, I put the spoon in my boil kettle to sterilize and leave it in there during cooling. Then, when the wort is cool and I pull out my immersion chiller, I can take a final volume measurement with the sterile spoon and use it to whirlpool the wort so that the trub and hops will cone up at the center of the pot.

I use a metal yardstick. I tape a sticker to one end that has the gallons per inch for each of my kettles.

Nah, no need to. It's quite visible. What I REALLY need to do is engrave numbers on it some day. I have used it for 3 years and 35+ brews now, and I STILL have to count each line.... I'm a lazy mofo.
