Pump or no pump

I like mine, bought it primarily because burning my knees on the HLT keg with 10 gallons of 180° sparge water inside was getting old. And painful. Used to gravity flow my system, works a lot better now on one level. Having hot sparge water 6' in the air is asking for problems.

Glad to see that you looked at the url; I thought it would save time from a lengthy explanation. It actually works quite well, and DO meter shows 12ppm O2 dissolved after 10 minutes, and 15ppm at KO. As always, YMMV Whatever works for you is what counts as long as you are making good beer!

Wow, that's a lot of O2! The article on Brew_Monkey states that only Pure O2 with a stone will give you more than 15ppm after about 2min, but then of course you need the tank and you've got to refill it.

Well, DO is temperature dependent, and if you are making lagers like I do then you can easily obtain these kind of figures using sterile air. Inexpensive (aka cheap) inline filters can be had at medical supply stores for O2 breathing systems that work great for filtering aquarium pump air btw. Just make sure to sanitize your diffusion stone in some star-san or other no rinse sanitizer (aquarium stones are ok to use, and they are cheap and plentiful). I oxygenate with pure O2 using a 20 lb O2 bottle that I picked up free from a friend that delivers medical equipment to rest homes. Best place to find cheap O2 bottles is either your local rest home, or medical supply store (provided you can get that old person smell outta the equipment ;^)) Happy brewing ans ILBCNUL8R!

I'm still too cheap to buy a pump. I use the gravity effect for moving my wort and strike water. I still need to get kegging gear before I start fine tuning all the rest of my brewery equipment. For now, gravity, free and FREE! It never needs cleaning, and doesn't malfunction. If my gravity system ever goes out, we've got bigger problems than not moving my beer.

I too picked up one of those little O2 tanks that the old folks use. It seems one of them left it behind at my work place and a week went by and nobody claimed it. So I put on my best Darth Vader imatation and they were strangely overcome with the idea to give it to me. Of course for lack of the the regulator and rest of the stuff I haven't used it yet. Like you said I could probably pick up the aeration stone at an aquarium store but the real tough item was that regulator for the O2 tank, you know how those are different. They have this funky spear type head on the tank that requires a special regulator. I have a friend or two in the respiratory therapy bizz that may be able to "loose" one but I imagine medical equipment companies have them as well.

I use them at work and was thinking that one might get "lost", but they are carefully watched and accounted for. The bottles on the other hand, they "get lost" a lot. If I find a place that sells the regulators I'll let you know. Don't "find" anything yet, it might be cheaper to buy than to pay fines.

Hey thanks! I agree with that assessment, I'll keep away from the lost and found bin. I think there are a few med supply houses out there that specialize in those items employed in the area of respiratory therapy which is exacly what that entire setup is but do let me know if you come up with source where I may purchase one.
