Cordless Drill for use with Barley Crusher

Tue Nov 11, 2008 11:11 am

I'm planning to get a Barley Crusher mill.

I also want to get a cordless drill to run the thing.

Any thoughts on this drill to run the Barley Crusher?

It is actually a bit on the wimpy side. Only 195 inch pounds of torque. On the same page you will find this one. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260 ... 000P?mv=rr
This one has 550 inch pounds of torque and is $10 cheaper. It is a hammer drill, so you need to use it in the drill setting only so you don't damage the mill. I use a similar size hammer drill on my mill and it works great.

That looks like a nice drill and it is $10 cheaper, but... it doesn't come with a battery. The battery costs $90.

What kind of torque should I be looking for?

Sorry, I didn't look that far down the page.

Basically you need to look for something with the most torque in your price range. Generally 1/2" drills and ones with an 18 volt battery will have the power you need. A 12 volt battery may not hold enough charge to power a mill through a big grain mill. Having to stop your crush for an hour to recharge would be a big PITA.

I use a cheap corded 1/2" hammer drill for mine. Only $30.

I think I found a pretty good deal for you. it is a Milwaukee (best tool company hands down) 14.4v cordless drill that comes with a cordless flashlight. It has 390 pounds of torque, 20 speed clutch and comes with a spare battery and clip. On sale for $99.00 from $182.00. I am gonna head down to Home Depot later and see if they have it.

Why a cordless drill? I bought a gear motor on eBay, <$50 shipped. That was for a mill I co-own with two other people. I recently bought another, this time the motor was like $10, although I think the shipping was $30 or so. It has a little more torque and a higher speed than the first one, but I don't know the specs off the top of my head. -Eric
