Can't use Midwest.
$4.99/oz for last years crop at AHB? Plus shipping. Man that's steep. I can't support that kind of pricing.

Other hops aren't that expensive anymore. Freshops and Hopsdirect are selling a lot of varieties for slightly over $2 oz for 2008 crop. I'm sure it's a great recipe, but at those prices, I'll never know.

Maybe if Simcoe comes onto the market at market prices - still looking here. :?

Hey guys. This beer as mostly about the malt bill so I recommend going to your stash of hops and coming up with a 33-38 IBU hop bill where one third of the IBUs are between 20 minutes and flameout. The hops I list are for what I call "Pliny Lite" but that's just because the beer was conceived when I blended 3 oz of my Pliny The Elder clone with 9 oz of my Munich Helles. I'm thinking about a "Ruination Lite" or a "90 Minute Lite" next. The goal of this recipe is a dry quaffable beer with IPA level hop flavor from an APA level (lower cost) hop bill. The goal is not a beer you can't make because you can't get the hops.

Also, although the beer definitely benefits from dry hopping, you don't necessarily have to. The late additions should carry over enough and those hops could better be used for another batch.

So mix it up and change the name. Choose your favorite hops and make it your beer.

Tasty

(P.S. I just had a thought about an interesting single style beer comp the BN could hold.)
yep, yep, yep, yep

Next up:
JBA Light
Fermenting:
nada
Serving:
Rauchbier (ugh!)

Thanks for the insight. :D
It's great when you can get perspective and objective instead of just a recipe. I can afford to use lots of hops, so I'm cool there - just got my big Freshops order on top of a good homegrown batch. It's that frigging Simcoe that's just such a bitch for me to source here.

So what about the comment regarding hops amount if going flameout? I would have thought you would double the the amount if not using a hopback.

Have not looked at the recipe yet, just finished reading the posts...
Just had to say that I was blown away by this brew at GABF. Amazingly clear and balanced with complex hops that do not mask the malts... After my first taste I just said, "Wow, how the hell did he do that!". On to the link to find out!
Thanks Tasty! It was cool meeting you and others at the Fest!
Cheers!
