Honey Malt Substitute?

Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:35 am

I'm going to be brewing Jamil's 60 Shilling, but my brew shop doesn't carry Honey Malt, is there anything I can substitute? Maybe a crystal 20Lov?

I would use Crystal 10 or 20. Not an exact sub, but close.

Like Sean said, C20 is the closest, but honey malt is worth seeking out, IMO. It has a unique honey-like flavor that is tough to duplicate with crystal malts.

Honey malt is sprouted in a low oxygen environment, which leads to sweeter sugars after kilning, absent of the "edge" that many crystal malts can have.

When I mentioned Gambrinus honey malt to a Weyermann sales rep, he claimed their melanoidin malt was roughly equivalent. I'm not sure I buy that, but that's what he said.

even the use of honey will not have the same effect as using honey malt. Honey malt leaves more of a honey flavor than honey does....unless you used insane amounts of honey, but then your OG would be high.
suck it

I would suggest belgian aromatic malt as a substitute. although not the same aroma, it's in the ballpark, and unlike crystal malt is digestible by the yeast.
