They probably think you're running a meth lab more than distilling.

I brew in my garage, too. Too much of a pain to haul that crap aroung the back of the house. When I lived in California no one cold care what I was doing in the garage. But now that I live in Jersey, I feel like the neighborhood dealer. Oh well, maybe a can find a few homebrew junkies I can "string" along.

Hehe.... What the hell do the police say? I couldn't imagine that they have any idea what brewing equipment looks like.

They just asked "How's it going?" as they watched what I was doing from the sidewalk. I'm guessing that they saw the grains and figured it must be beer. I also didn't freak and start shooting at them so I'm obviously not cooking up meth. (I also have good skin and teeth so I don't look like a meth-head.) The Davis police are usually pretty good about not messing with people unless there is a law being broken. I welcomed them back in a couple weeks (after duty, of course) to try the beer but haven't seen anything more them them slowing down as they pass by my house to check out what is up with all the stainless steel pots.

My brew day usually lasts between 5 and 6 hours and usually begins with me plugging my recipe information into my online recipe calculator on my website -- http://powersbrewery.home.comcast.net/tables.html. I then print the page out and take it to my brewery. I prepare all my brew water at once and heat it to the strike temperature that I have calculated. Next I transfer 1.25 qts of water per pound of grain to my mashtun. The rest of the liquid is sent to my HLT (the temperature here is automated). I mix in my grains, and the mash begins. I usually use a 1 hour mash but I have tried mashing for up to 9 hours before in order to compare the final results (no benefit I found). I usually fly sparge for an hour and then begin with a 60 to 90 minute boil. Cooling takes about 20 minutes and then I aerate and pitch my yeast. Including cleanup, the process takes about 5 and 1/2 hours.

Sometimes my brewday is longer because I count the time I wait for my cold break & trub to settle out. Then I rack to another carboy and pitch my yeast.
Other than that I would say 5 hours long.

My new place has a little 10x10 courtyard in the center of the house, open to the sky with power outlets, a faucet, and a gently dished concrete floor centered on a drain. Can't ask for much better! About the only drawback is that my little daughter's room is adjacent to it, and the unholy racket from the propane burner makes timing brewing around her naps an issue. My bedroom is also adjacent, as is the living room, so I can even be social with the family if I'm so inclined. Don't miss any football games either.

Life is good :)

I'm at 5:30 if everything goes as planned, or it goes longer if I have problems
