Not to derail the thread, but is it alright to rinse star san? Is there anything bad about doing it. The reason I would is that I can't sway anyones opinion that you can rack right over star san. They think star san foam is disgusting and will refuse to allow me to use it without a rinse.

Unless your rinse water is boiled and cooled - you risk a possible infection. I have rinsed with plain water with no issues (outside with a hose) when brewing with buddies that were also freaked out. My city water is pretty well clorinated - not good for brewing - but probably OK for a rinse. I would never do it from the kitchen sink... to much funkyness in there. When I am brewing alone, I usually drain most of the foam and rack on what is left... No fermentation, taste, or head retention issues ever.

I know there are no problems, but people get freaked out, so I have to do something.

Who is this evil "they" of which you speak?

Yes, the reason not to rinse star-san is that unless your water is sanitized, you just dumped a bunch of contaminants into your fermenter/bottles/keg/etc.

look at the positives... if they won't drink it, more beer for you!
Use Iodophor and you don't have to rinse either and the foam dosen't hang around as long.

Or use the 5 Star Sani-Clean. Twice concentration (therefore, price) and twice the contact time (60 sec vs. 30 sec).

I know you'll throw out stuff about star-san being safe and everything, but it was once thought that DDT was safe.
