i've had to go with the fat boy. mine are 500mm high by 500mm dia making them 100 litre so good for 70-80 litre boils. be a lot less at the end. i'm happy to take the lid off and stir, but will put the lid on to settle.
just getting stuff together to build mine. only got a 30,000 btu burner for now though. the bigger ones are expensive over here.

by the way, in case bub got all upset, when I said I had to go with the "fat boy" I was talking about the shape of the kettle not just that I was agreeing with him. :D

I agree...it's tough to get an accurate temperature while chilling with a stationary thermometer unless you open the lid and stir it a bit...which defeats the purpose of not having to open the lid exposing wort to air. I just use a long stemmed thermometer and stir the probe end around the wort to get an accurate reading....works fine. 44 bucks is enough to pick up another cool gadget that makes more sense.

Will you use that with a recirculating chiller or something? Please report back if you find it holds up to boiling temps OK.

Yes, I whirlpool and then recirc back into the kettle from a CFC.

Ah, food grade, shmood grade. :) Actually it's a good question. I have no idea. These are designed to monitor shower temps which can be (but shouldn't be) as high as 160. I think I'll give it a trial run with boiling water - chill it then taste and smell it. It probably won't be that much of an issue. I can get 10 gal below 150 in about ten minutes. When it shows up I'll try to contact the manufacturer, too.
