I found my chest freezer (5 cu ft) on craigslist for $40, it even fit in my Subaru.

Trigger pulled. Just ordered a 2-keg "kit." Patiently waiting for the delivery and my basement to be done so I can begin to use "The Brew Room."

Good news is my Stone 070707 showed up today...mmmmmmm.

One thing I would suggest, as I am in the process of acquiring all the bits and bobs for kegging, is to think long term. If you can swing it, get a 20lb CO2 tank, an expandable CO2 distribution set up, if you have the space a large chest freezer (Get a new one as an old cheep one will cost you more to power the damn thing then to buy a new one), and I would suggest getting a regulator with two ports or adding a wye with two shut off valves. One to the kegs and the second for flushing kegs, carboys, counter pressure fillers, etc…

Anyway just a couple thoughts...

I recently built a new chest freezer kegerator and took several pictures along the way. Here's a link to the website I made:

I got a lot of my stuff from Beverage Factory because they seem to have some of the best prices around. The stuff that Beverage Factory didn't have, I got from MoreBeer. Forget getting a kit, and buy the parts you need.

Thanks gents...as it stands I now have two used kegs, a dual pressure regulator (2 low sides to keep kegs at different pressures) and sm soaking all keg parts in PBW. Can ruber stand to soak for several days?
Or should I just buy new seals and poppets...leaving for a short trip tomorrow. Free Chest freezer on the way...good point re: energy consumption. How bad is it to run an old one versus a new one? REally worth the $200 or so to by a new one?

More to follow...

probably ok with a chest freezer esp, if it is kept inside.

Thanks Bub. It will be in my basement. I'll have to watch my utility bills to see what difference it makes.

Do refurbished kegs typically retain the soda smell even after soaked and cleaned?

Not if you change out the rubber parts.
