Alright so I’m late to the bitch-fest and this is reiteration. BH has great knowledge to share but that was some serious douche-baggery. And come to think of it, not a lot of shared knowledge. How many times can you answer a question with a question…apparently enough to fill an entire session. I kept waiting for J to call bullshit, Doc to question his logic, or Jip to be Jip. He was a d-bag to the casters, listeners, and Full Sail…oh thanks for the lecture on sourdough and the unrealized potential of the Columbia River gorge...good thing you're here to sound the alarm. Also, try leaving the cultural suppositions to those better qualified…what if, what if, what if corn, barley, loincloths, blah, blah, blah. Yes we get it, brew for taste v. rigid beer styles, it’s the session not a misinformed intro anthropology course at a community college.

Remember lowly home brewers, if you can’t brew as well as “it’s fucking great” Dupont…don’t call it a Saison. What’s that BH, your glass is empty during a session? Good thing you stopped the discussion yet again to tell me. Looking forward to the only horse’s-ass on the session being JP, as it should be.

No matter what you think of Brian, you gotta admit that it's obvious he's using appearances like this simply to get a reaction, and after 8 pages of responses here I think he achieved that.

I could see how in this interview he might come off as an arrogant jerk, but I think he's just having a little fun with the setting and the idea of a show like this - as others mentioned, his brand of sarcasm doesn't come across in this setting so well sometimes. He obviously enjoys pushing and fucking with people a bit, and in an area with so much craft beer I really enjoy showing up at the local beer bars and seeing things like Brian's Uncle Fudd and Working For Tips on tap.. It's quite a risk, and always seems to go over well (I show up a few days later and the keg is gone).. Homebrewer mentality of creativity on the professional level, and he's not afraid to take the risk. cheers to that!
Cheers! Kippis! Skål! Prost!

Shit, get Shea Comfort back in, thats a MAUN! I am not trying to be a dick, I loved the parts that Brian wasn't talking, but he just talked too much. I was hoping that there would be a quality meltdown w/o him, but no luck. I does make me all that more pumped for the next live Sunday Show!

Quite possibly.

I haven't finished the podcast... don't really care to. Even if he is just stirring the pot, I didn't like how he seemed to intentionally sabotage Justin's effort for a semi-coherent interview. Also, how he treated the brewcasters in general. Aside from all the other issues I had with his takes, I can respect his opinions, but I thought he was a bit of a bag to the brewcasters, and that's uncalled for IMO.

There are years and years of killer sunday sessions. I opted to skip forward to the Stan episode. Now we are talkin' beer!

OK, my turn to add to the fun...
I have listened to this podcast off and on during the week (mostly while running at lunchtime).
I found some of the hypotheses of "what if barley was native to North America" or "corn to Eurasia" very thought provoking. It does challenge the basis of reality (ok, that may be a stretch here at the BN) that we currently are in. His takes on barley, and by relation, beer being the 'seed' of the civilized world to be a bit of a stretch, but a neat thought nonetheless. Probably ought to leave those sorts of theories to the anthropologists however (vs the brewers, because we are indeed biased).

I also believe that it's good practice to make stuff with what you have locally (i.e. water, etc) and that brewers in Colorado should make fucking gorgeous pilsners (oh wait.... we actually do). But like many people have stated, because we have access to a lot of kickass ingredients, that shouldn't limit what we make. We should make what we want - because we can. I grow cascades in my backyard and they find their way into many of my beers. Because they fucking taste and smell wonderful.

I do take exception to his statement that BJCP people are shackled by styles (I'm a National by the way, and while I think that styles are indeed important, people shouldn't get bent out of shape over them). Styles are there to give people an idea of what they're getting into. If you handed me a gruit and said that it was simply a 'beer', or it was on the 'beer menu', I'd expect, at a minimum, some short description of what the fuck it is. If you gave it to me saying it was a pale ale and it tasted like rosemary, I'd say that it was a lousy pale ale. However, if the rosemary blended well with the experience, well then let's talk. But if I wasn't in the mood for a rosemary gruit, then I would order something else. Simply stating that people who are bound by styles can't appreciate things that are out of the style space are full of shit.

I still have the last third of the show to go, so it should be interesting.
But as, I believe, Nathan said, this guy got the BN riled up, huh? Lots of good discussion here on the forum. For better or worse, that's saying something. Much better than a milktoast guest that Justin has to squeeze for a conversation (not that it's happened).
