OK, my turn to add to the fun...
I have listened to this podcast off and on during the week (mostly while running at lunchtime).
I found some of the hypotheses of "what if barley was native to North America" or "corn to Eurasia" very thought provoking. It does challenge the basis of reality (ok, that may be a stretch here at the BN) that we currently are in. His takes on barley, and by relation, beer being the 'seed' of the civilized world to be a bit of a stretch, but a neat thought nonetheless. Probably ought to leave those sorts of theories to the anthropologists however (vs the brewers, because we are indeed biased).
I also believe that it's good practice to make stuff with what you have locally (i.e. water, etc) and that brewers in Colorado should make fucking gorgeous pilsners (oh wait.... we actually do). But like many people have stated, because we have access to a lot of kickass ingredients, that shouldn't limit what we make. We should make what we want - because we can. I grow cascades in my backyard and they find their way into many of my beers. Because they fucking taste and smell wonderful.
I do take exception to his statement that BJCP people are shackled by styles (I'm a National by the way, and while I think that styles are indeed important, people shouldn't get bent out of shape over them). Styles are there to give people an idea of what they're getting into. If you handed me a gruit and said that it was simply a 'beer', or it was on the 'beer menu', I'd expect, at a minimum, some short description of what the fuck it is. If you gave it to me saying it was a pale ale and it tasted like rosemary, I'd say that it was a lousy pale ale. However, if the rosemary blended well with the experience, well then let's talk. But if I wasn't in the mood for a rosemary gruit, then I would order something else. Simply stating that people who are bound by styles can't appreciate things that are out of the style space are full of shit.
I still have the last third of the show to go, so it should be interesting.
But as, I believe, Nathan said, this guy got the BN riled up, huh? Lots of good discussion here on the forum. For better or worse, that's saying something. Much better than a milktoast guest that Justin has to squeeze for a conversation (not that it's happened).
