Iso-hop bitterness extract

Mon Sep 28, 2009 4:49 pm

I picked up some of the ISO-HOP Bitterness extract from MoreBeer. Has anyone had any experience with this?

No but you can use it to make a beer that wont skunk! I say use it and make an american premium lager and bottle it in 40's. Morebeer's site has some good info on usage.

Thanks - I got it to increase the IBUs on an ESB that didn't come out exactly right. I have the formula pretty much understood but want to see if anyone has used it. I'll give it a shot.

I picked up some of the same type of extract from Hop Union a few years ago. I used it on a barleywine that had lost all of it's hop character. It brought it back enough to medal in a couple of competitions. It's pretty much lacks the character of any particular hop but does help with the bittering. As such you would need to use it in combination with a hop that will add the desired aroma and flavor.

Thanks Bugeater - that;s what I was looking for. The beer is drinkable but lacks a little bit of the bitterness. I got the extract to push it up. I didn't, however, want to ruin it.

Depending on the type of iso-alpha acid, it may still skunk. Not all extracts are not automatically protected from the skunking reaction.
