Jack Daniels Barrels

Sun Aug 06, 2006 9:37 am

Ok, so what would you do with four Jack Daniels aging barrels? I live near the Jack Daniels distillery, and have a friend who works in the aging warehouse. I scored four yesterday. These barrels had whiskey in them last week. They probably still have a pint or two of old #7 in them. The smell is overwelling.

So what should I do with them? Sure, I'd like to fill 'em with beer, but even Fiddy-G ain't filling these bad boys up. Any suggestions?

Send me one...
Get 4 of your bes biddies together and each make 10g of RIS.
Ferment, check for nastyness... add to barrel.
Wait....
when you want your 5 gal brew up a batch and ferment out.... take out 5g from the barrel and add your new batch to top it off.
Send me a 6 pack.

I want one too, seriously. How would a normal fellow get a hold of one of those?

I took a tour there a couple of years ago.. I think you can buy them (and everything you can imagine made out of them) at the gift shop in town.

You can indeed buy them there. $65 a pop. Problem is, The ones they sell are from "the yard". Since they're only used once, and the Scottish distillery no longer purchases them, they pile them up in a big field of tall grass. Literally thousands of them. They're all open to the weather with the bung hole open. Let me tell ya, wasps absolutley love to take up residence in these things. The ones I get are fresh, and never see "the yard".

I would be more than happy to share the wealth, not expecting a profit, but they weigh 110 lbs., and freight costs prolly would make it not worth while. Best thing I can say is come to TN and I'll hook you up.

BTW, the Olde Dude at the shop does make some kick ass furnature out of them.

Rich, it'll be a couple of months, but I'm going to pass through TN on my way to visit family. I'll pay whatever your friend is asking for them.

I was thinking the same thing. Great idea Bub!! We had a homebrew club let us try a beer that is aged the same way and it was GREAT!
