Dry Tabacco'ing

Tue May 12, 2009 6:42 am

A friend has, perfectly legally, grown a good whack of 'baccy.

it's dried over winter, and smelling quite aromatic.

I wonder what or how I might dry 'baccy an imperial stout?

dip the leaves in starsan, then roll up and put in one of those long skinny tea ball things that B3 sells for dry hopping/spicing in a carboy.

soak them in vodka for a few days, then dose the batch with the infused vodka.

Maybe shredding would release more flavor? you could use a hop sack for that.

Interesting idea; please post how it works out.

NO!

Are you fuckin' serious? This sounds like a horribly dangerous idea. You could potentially extract way more nicotine than you may think. Heart attack anyone? I'm not joking - you could really create a potentially lethal concoction.

There have been incidents over the years where people have attempted to make their own tobacco extracts that were simple tinctures of tobacco leaves and alcohol. They had no idea that the levels of extracted nicotine were enough to cause a heart attack within minutes. They found out the hard way. The average LD50 for most humans is around 50mg. In addition, your liver will be doing double duty, since it metabolizes alcohol and most systematic nicotine.

You want booze and a smoke? Do it the old fashioned way and have a good Cuban with a nice glass of rum. Don't fuck around.

Wow, I had no idea!

I'm suprised that the equivalent of, say, one cigar (one serving of nicotene) encased in this Image and dropped in a carboy (50 servings) would be more dangerous than smoking the cigar in the first place.

Now if you pack the carboy with 3# of leaves and then fill the carboy with imperial stout, I can see that likely being a problem, but a little for flavor and aroma?

I tasted a Smoked Cherry Porter recently that tasted like cherry skoal. I didn't like it at all.

Ugh.... nicotine beer. Sounds about as appetizing as nicotine gum. Yuck.

just sounds a little disgustiing.... I don't mind a good cigar every once in a while ... but putting it in a beer... thats just wrong

I've had my fair share of Imperial Stouts / Baltic Porters that have a significant tobacco note. It is certainly possible to accomplish with malts. I would still rather have a cigar with an Imperial Stout than put it into the beer, though.

That is really interesting what Julian said, though. I never would have guessed.
