Refractometer VS ph Meter...... Which Toy ?

Tue May 02, 2006 2:27 pm

So guys, which toy should I get? For about the same money I could get an electronic ph meter or an ATC Refractometer. Where would my money be better spent? (mostly I would like to check the final running of sparge water and know when to stop. Currently I collect and cool the run-off, then check the gravity with a hydrometer. Too time consuming.

I think you would get a lot more use out of a refractometer. Thats what I would go with anyway. Also you have to buy a new probe for the ph meter every year.

Refractometer, no question. You will use the refracto three times every brewday, and at least once before packaging. The pH is maybe once per mash, and you won't even need that every time.
Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors -- and miss.

Refracto !! This is the best tool outside of my chillus convolutus and aeration plumbing. Definately a time saver. I hear that the ph meter probes/sensor (not sure) only last a year or so and you have to replace 'em. Sounds like a pain and a cost I don't need. Anyway, after a few brews you will have the ph down anyway and won't have to worry about it.

You probably have a brew buddy who you can borrow one from anyway!! Brewgeeks are like magnets man!
i brew, therefore, I AM

Refract without question...
But don't get rid of that hydrometer for the final gravity check.

As an aside... when should you stop your sparge? I usually just go until I get the volume I am looking for...
