Mac & Jack's Serengeti Wheat

Mon May 18, 2009 7:47 pm

So I live in the Seattle area and finally took some time off from moving and painting the new house to go to the Mac & Jack's brewery tour in Redmond WA. The tour consisted of an overview of the brewery (read standard tour) with a tasting of their 4 beers. The first was the Serengeti Wheat, followed by the signature Mac & Jack's amber, their IPA (which was not my favorite), and finally the Black Cat Porter.

I've only had the amber before at various bars and better food establishments so I was hopeful when we reached the brewery. The wheat was one of the best I've ever had. I'm used to Widmer's hefe and the Pyramid Hefe so I'm curious what others think about the Serengeti compared to other American wheats they've had. I loved their version and will be taking a corney keg in for filling the next time I have a chance.

I live down the street from Mac and Jack's, and still haven't been there. I keep saying I need to, but never do it. Plus, with Black Raven here, it's hard to pick Mac and Jack's over them :)

I personally think Widmer hef and Pyramid are foul tasting. I actually used to work in the brewery at Redhook and we made Widmer hef there. Stuff made the cellars smell like sulfur, and the krausen hardened like epoxy glue. I had to chisel that shit off of everything every time it decided to overflow out the CO2 vents. anyway... sorry about the rant 8) But I'm pretty certain that Mac and Jack's is far more capable of making a good wheat than either of them, so I will enthusiastically give it a shot.

Thanks for the review!
