I completely agree. I am confident in saying that this beer is one of my top three, and I don't tend to like the sweeter ones.

Just available here in the last month as well. Looks like a Washington based importer (Merchants du Vin, Tukwilla) is bringing this to distributors in our area. Had my first last Saturday. And 1st Orval as well. We are becoming less and less of a beer desert here.

I was actually in the little town of Rochefort (Belgium) last weekend... I even spied the abbey... picked up a 20-pack of both the 8 and the 10 in .33 cl bottles (I like the 8 a bit more than the 10, but with the 10, I can lure my buddies over to my place for a little weekend shindig)... to be sure, this is very good beer. Not the BEST beer available from Belgium, but I had neither the time or the (cheap) gas to drive all the way up into Flanders for what I consider to be "better stuff." I get a citrus, pine, and even cherry and fig aroma... strong malt with vanilla... it certainly doesn't go down like a 9.2%!!! :jnj

Personally, I'm a fan of the Brasserie de Silly, in the town of Silly, near Chievres and Mon, mostly because they were within crawling distance of my home when I was working for the Army in Chievres. Total population is around 8,000, but the brewery is a center-piece. They brew up a GREAT saison... and their Belgium strong ale, called "La Divine," is just that!!

If you make it to the town, there's a bar across from the brewery where you can get almost every style they brew (I counted 12). The bar owner looks like Rod Stewart, hair and all... and you'll know you're in the right bar, because he has Rod's pictures all over the place!!

Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Westmalle or St. Feuillien... and if you're lucky enough to get an advance appointment to purchase a limited quantity of Westfleteren, go for it!! The latter is hard to do, though.

As for places to drink, while Brussels is pretty popular, I'd pass on it and head straight for Bruges... the Brewery de Halve Maan is a GREAT way to kill a couple of hours on a brewery tour. But if you're there to drink, pass on that and head STRAIGHT to the MECCA, called 't Brugs Beertje. The selection here is INCREDIBLE, and you'll forever remember the pleasant atmosphere. They carry over 300 different Belgian beers, and the menu comes in a 3-ring binder an inch think!!

ENJOY!!!
