But what you *can* do is memorize the acronym "LCBO" as well as "The Beer Store" because those are the only two places you can buy packaged beer up there -- apparently the government has tight controls of distribution of alcohol in Ontario. They do have a very interesting selection of Canadian brews and British imports, mostly in 500-ml cans (not so many bottles). That's a decent sized can of brew -- approximately 16 oz (I'm too lazy to do the math). But if you're looking for IPAs or craft brews with a selection similar to what you'd find in the USA, you might be disappointed.

I can get the US stuff at home. Good tip about the 1/2 liter cans. I'll probably pick up a few to bring back home.

As a resident of St. Catharines, Ontario, so a 10 minute drive from the Falls I can indeed tell you there is nothing here. Its actually easier for me to drive to Buffalo and hit Premier Gourmet or Cole's for a fresh pint than buy something local. The Merchant Ale House on St. Paul St. in St. Catharines really is about as good as it gets around here and that's not saying much. I will also mention two other rather new brewpubs, Taps and The Syndicate, both of which are located in Niagara Falls. I will recommend The Syndicate for the food, but I cannot in good conscience recommend Taps.

If you have any questions feel free to drop me a line.

How did you like the beers at the Syndicate? I checked it out and you are right the food was fantastic. I enjoyed the beers as well, particularly the single hopped Pacific Gem.
