Ballast Ppint Yellowtail Pale Ale

Sat May 03, 2008 1:30 pm

ok, this one is different from the start

most pale ales in the US are based on English pales/ESB

this isn't - it's heritage is the kolsch

the kolschiness runs through, light continental malt, but too big for a kolsch

it's different I like it, but it wouldn't win any awards judged strictly to style
it's not a sticke, it's not an APA, it's somethign in the middle
On tap 1: Dry Irish
On tap 2: El Jefeweizen
On tap 3: Vienna
kegged: Rye Amber, Belgian Dark Strong, CYBI Mirror Pond, Irish Red, RIS
lagering: Vienna, Helles, Cream Ale, CAP

Ballast Point makes some tasty brews. When I lives in San Diego, I did a lot of my homebrew shopping at Home Brew Mart. The guys at Home Brew Mart started Ballast Point as a small operation in the back of the store. I understand they now have a stand alone brewery somewhere else, but they still brew good size batches in the back of home Brew Mart. They have a tasting bar in the store. They even have cask conditioned ales on a beer engine. It is totally awesome to be able to sip on 4 oz samples of Ballast Point beers while shopping for your homebrew stuff. Plus the guys brewing in the back are the same guys running the homebrew shop in the front so you get to draw on knowlege from both worlds. Man, I miss that place!

Yeah, Yellow Tail is a very good beer. It's got a slightly smokey woody flavor, maybe a bit of smoked peat moss or something...a unique flavor that is really good fresh, right out of the fermenter. That's a good bunch of guys at Ballast Point! Doug, Cy. George and all the crew are great help. Cheers to Ballast Point!
Enjoy Great Beer!
