Pliny the Younger Clone

I'm planning on brewing a Pliny the Younger clone next week. I think I've settled on a recipe I found online ,and i was just looking for some input. The recipe I"m leaning towards uses an insane amount of Hop Extract. It almost seems like too much, even for a "triple IPA" My main question is does this look like a reasonable hop bill?

I've used the Hop Shots when I brewed Evil Twin. Two of them gave a nice, solid hop bitterness that Northern Brewer said would be around 100 IBUs. I've never seen what the IBUs are in PtY, but 14 Hop Shots sounds like a lot. What's your batch size?

The recipe is for 12 gallons. I'll probably scale it down to 9 gallons. And I'll have to add more grain, my efficiency is not as high as the original brewer.

Keep us posted. I'd be interested to hear how it turns out.

I thought the amount of hops was insane as well, but it turned out great!

The only thing I'd recommend is (like all other IIPAs) drinking it fairly young/fresh. I have about 1/2 keg of this left (it was kegged late Sep 2013) and a lot of the hop flavour/aroma that was originally there has subsided.

Let us know how it turns out!

Hey Kal thanks for posting that recipe. Drinking it fresh shouldn't be a problem. My wife is a huge hop head, sometimes i think she has to almost has be chewing on a hop cone before she thinks its a good beer.

I read on your post that you thought it would have better drier, so i think I'm going to drop the C40, and use WLP090 instead of the 05. I've had some good luck with making some drier barley wines with yeast recently.

Sounds like a plan, though I'm not sure I'd completely get rid of the C40. Maybe a combination of slightly reducing the C40 and the carapils? You could even up the plain sugar slightly too. Good luck!
