I made a rose colored beer in collaboration with a brewery.

It was a Hibiscus Rose Hips Saison. It was highly acidic and dry and wonderful but it was pink.

Fantastic beer, but actually brewing for a women is stupid and degrading, they can and do enjoy what men enjoy so the concept is stupid. We brewed this beer to get this color and see what a lot of hibiscus in a beer would do, it made it wonderful.

I am going to do a split batch in the next couple months that will be a berliner weisse version and the regular version and see what happens.

My starting recipe will use a Flanders red base which makes a nice ruby red beer, then add a lot of unmalted and malted wheat to provide a nice white haze to the beer. The result should be a creamy pink beer with a rocky white head. I'm Not above introducing a non-spoiling bacterial infection to help with the haze, however.

If you want some haze use a heap of unmalted wheat....cant help you get it pink though

If you're brewing a pink beer just use food coloring. I mean you already lost all credibility so why not just drop trough and take it. :unicornrainbow:

I have identified several malts that should get me close to the color I'm looking for. I will start brewing experimental batches as soon as my brew schedule slows down. Probably February, unless I decide to brew for the AHA this year instead of the MCAB. I guess the first round is in the spring. either way, I'll at least make a couple of batches to see how pink i can brew a beer. I'll nail it sooner or later.

I actually am doing this as a response to someone who was initially planning to use food coloring to make pink beer to appeal to women. I absolutely agree that it is a stupid idea. It did however lead me to the idea of brewing a beer that is naturally pink, using only malt for color, which kind of narrows the flavor range quite a bit, since there just aren't that many malts that provide the appropriate shades. This project IS NOT, repeat NOT about brewing something to appeal to women. It's just another challenge. There isn't much challenge in making a beer that color if you insist on using non-malt additives or artificial colors, hence my stipulations about only getting the color from malt. Now (after a little research) I'm absolutely positive I'll get something pink if I keep trying. Maybe not hot pink, but pink enough to not just be another red ale.

I know what you are trying to do, I get it.

Limiting it to malt will be hard and I just wanted to share the hibiscus thing because it was really good and rose in color. Just another natural alternative to get the color you want, not malt but not food coloring either.

It also added a amazing flavor.

I have tasted it, and BrewBum isn't lying. Fantastic, complex beer! It almost tastes like a zinfandel. The color is crazy as well. Hoping to have some more this weekend at the Great Nebraska Beerfest.
