For Obsidian Stout I used Black Patent Malt.
I hope my post helped in some way. If not, please feel free to contact me.

Woohoo, luck was actually on my side for once!! Now I just need to get the right kind of yeast...picked up Nottingham by accident because I use it for virtually everything, but will be too dry for this apparently.

Dang it! Well, if it is any consolation (to me), mine with black barley turned out great, and having them side by side, i'd say mine was a tad more sweet, just a tiny bit though - still cloned almost exactly.

Next time. :aaron

I'm confused. JZ used 1.43lbs of black patent in a 6 gallon batch?

My 1.4 lbs roasted barley version is fermenting as we speak. I suppose experimentation is a good thing.

650 g Black Patent Malt
50 g Roasted Barley

Are we not speaking these words when we state the recipe on the show? Or have some people on this thread not listened to the show? Using the interview with Deschutes, our comments on the clone, and the reading of the recipe, I would think there should be no doubt as to the ingredients and the amount.

What are we not saying/including in the show that is making it difficult to get the recipe?
