The book convention is for 6 gallons post boil (it's amazing what you can find out if you read the entire book :P). Scale the recipe from there to match the losses you have on your equipment.

Good, because if you don't own the book, the beer doesn't come out right.

thanks tasty!

so the recipes are built for 6 gallon batches, with the idea that loss will occur in brewing and transferring etc. so then you end up with 5 gallons of brew?

Right, I think it accounts for 1/2 gallon lost in the kettle and another 1/2 gallon left in the fermenter (trub, etc.), to end up with a final volume of 5.

And as an added bonus, you don't feel like you are straining to get the last drop of beer out of the fermenter and into a keg. At least, it puts my mind at ease.

It's a good idea to test your equipment and get a precise idea of your losses at each stage. for example, i know i leave behind 3.3 quarts in the kettle and i think 2.25 quarts in the mash tun.
