Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel

Fri Sep 02, 2011 3:43 pm

Hey All,

I've been googling and searching the forums for a Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel clone and all I've found is a few people who take guesses but haven't actually tried it.

I think it's an incredible beer and it would be great to see them try it on Can You Brew It, but in the mean time, anyone have a good clone recipe they could share? :D Apparently a lot of reviewers call it out of style, but I think its an awesome beer anyway!

Thanks !

I personally find erdingers weissbiers to be too restrained, as if they are fermented in the fifties.BCS has a nice dunkel weiss. I would use jamils base recipe, oxygenate very well, pitch 2 l starter, pitch at 58, ferment at 59-60. That should keep the esters well under control and give you a cleaner weissbier. I did a dunkel weiss using jamils base recipe(almost the same) that I fermented cold 59 and I felt it was similar in ester profie to erdinger. A large pitch and oxygenating well will both help control esters.
On Deck: Bier de Garde, Northern German Pils
In Fermenters: Homegrown Pale Ale
in keg: Octoberweizen, Dusseldorf Alt

Thanks for the reply. I'd seen the BCS recipe but thought it might be very different since a lot of reviews I read were calling Erdinger out of style. I'll probably give it a try tho. Good to see you have the Helles on the go. It's one of my favs even tho I usually go for stronger beers.
