Wheat grain question

Mon Jan 16, 2006 1:25 pm

Hey everyone. My father-in-law asked me today if I could use uncrushed wheat to make beer. He has 6 plus pallets of 7gal buckets of wheat that is for grinding into flour to make bread. He said that if I could use it I can have all I want. I am not sure if this is malted. Does that really matter?
I am fairly new to all grain. The only wheat beer I make was an AG kit from NB. I would like to experiment but thought a little guidence would be helpful.

several belgian ales use unmalted wheat.

I think you are ok if use a good portion of a basemalt.

Ya you can use it. Depending on what your making I wouldn't go over a pound or so in much of anything.

Let me know if you need to get rid of some

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

you can use it, but its needs to be milled, also as Lufah says dont use too much as it does not have the enzymes to convert the starch to sugar, it will need to lend it from the matled grain your using....10% is my rules but i think you could go higher

You can use it unmalted, especially in a Belgian Wit.

Feeling adventurous? Malt some yourself and you can use it in any amount you want. (Rice hulls may be necessary)
Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors -- and miss.
