Water test results need your input

Thu Mar 21, 2013 8:24 am

Well I'm getting ready to move the brewery out of storage now that the new ''storage / man cave" is inclosed. So I decided to have my well water tested by a local respected water engineering co. Water tested from two sights, first set from the PVC pipe where the water enters the house (where I get my brewing water) Second from the sink in the kitchen. There are currently NO water filters in the system. Here are the results what do you think. Some of it is not what I expected Thanks in advance for any and all input!

PH 5.8
Alkalinity 56.4
Total Recoverable Calcium 14.3
Hardness as CaCo3 50
Carbonate as CO3 Non Detectable
Bicarbonate as HCO3 68.8
Total recoverable Iron 138
Total recoverable Magnesium 3.4
Total recoverable Manganese 71
Total Recoverable Sodium 10
Nitrate 2.17
Conductivity 162

Here is the additional I got from the sink in the house...
Coper 1550 ug/l
Lead N/D
Sulfate N/D

Thanks,
TimCA

Sorry, I just couldn't read that without looking at the code. Here's a more mellow copy for anyone else who needs it. I didn't do the math, but at quick glance it doesn't look too shabby. I think the iron may be a little high, but I'm not all that certain. I believe running it through a charcoal filter takes care of a good part of it though.

I'm assuming the iron and manganese are quoted in ug/L since the water would be unpalatable otherwise. But the water doesn't look too bad. You should still send the sample to Ward for a more complete set of results for brewing. The results for chloride and sulfate are desirable. It would also serve as a double check of the existing test results. Get test W-6 from Ward.

Or just go with the tried & true - if it tastes like good water, just brew with it

That IS the most important criterion. However, its no guarantee for success. But there should be some beers that could be made successfully with that criterion. Its when you want to brew any beer that knowing what is in your beer matters.
