Grain: substitutes for Special B and Aromatic

Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:10 pm

I'm in Australia and brew mainly Belgians. A lot of the recipes (e.g. Jamil's Dark Strong Ale) include "Special B" and "Aromatic" malts. I don't think I get these locally. What are these malts? What can I substitute to get the same effect?

although not exact, you can sub crystal 120 or a dark caramunich for the special B.

For the aromatic... hmm.. Vienna, biscuit, amber, melanoidin, or victory.

The best choice probably depends on what you're making. For Belgians, I'd probably go with the biscuit.

You can get Caraaroma malt from Grain and Grape in Melbourne. Dont know if thats the right stuff though. They do delivery from thier web site.

No idea where you could get Special B from.
