Can you steep Golden Naked Oats?

Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:24 pm

I am brewing the Surly Blender clone and would like to try Gordon Strong's technique of mashing the base grains and and steeping the darker malts and then adding the 2 two by products to the boil. One of the 4 specialty malts is Gold Naked Oats, can I steep this or should I include that in the mash?
Cheers.

Since the Golden Naked Oats are a type of crystal malt, I suppose you could steep them. However, since they are so lightly roasted, there is really no advantage of steeping over mashing as there might be with the actual dark malts.

Thanks Bug,

I wound up steeping with the darker malts as they were already mixed in, I will let you know how it turns out in about 4 weeks.
Cheers.
