Vanilla Bean in black ipa?

Thu Aug 05, 2010 10:43 am

Do you guys think that vanilla bean would taste good in a black ipa?
I'm dry hopping one in secondary now and just got some vanilla beans in the mail and am itching to try them out.
The IPA that I brewed is very bitter and hoppy. It tastes like about 150 IBUs. Maybe it has enough going on already?

thanks,
Brannon

IMHO the vanilla would conflict with the hoppy goodness of an IPA.
I would say save the vanilla been for a dark beer, or a beer where that is the primary flavor you are looking for.

pour a few tasters and put different amounts in each one and see how it tastes before you possibly ruin a whole kegs worth. remember you can always add more...

Yea that's what I was thinking too. I just really want to try them out because I love the flavor. It's time to do a vanilla oatmeal stout I think.

Great idea. I really like how the ipa tastes now so testing it makes good sense.
