Mailbox Cooked Hops

1.5 lbs of hops sat in my mailbox for over 24 hours. Temps outside my black, metal, mailbox were 90+.

Should I just pitch them? I hate to throw out $50 but will not waste a 12-gal batch them if they are trash.

based onthe Hops shows on Bew Strong, temp is no so much concern as oxygenation. At 90f, they will oxidize faster than 20f but if they are vacuum sealed there should be little concern. If they are nitrogen packed, even less concerned.

I have had some at 80F for days and found no ill effects. Basically, yiou have to worry that the alpha acids dropping below 50% their original value. There are way to calculate this (I found this article interested and complex http://www.brewingtechniques.com/library/backissues/issue2.1/garetz.html). A couple days at 90f in barriers bags flushed with nitrogen won't likely be a problem.

One of the bags had some air inflitration, but others were sealed tight..I'll have to go re-listen to that archive.

All are now in freezer and I am going to crack bags and smell tomorrow to see how badly damaged they were.

It was 3 lbs...typo. Was in a hurry and frustrated with USPS and that I forgot to check mail yesterday.

One advantage of having a P.O. Box - keeps things out of the delivery truck and mailbox. I always order on the weekend so they ship monday or tuesday and not sit over the weekend. Picked up a Niko baggy on Friday at the P.O. But yeah - three pounds at $50+ does take getting used to. I also have the nicest Post Office in the US near my house. And one of the crappiest Post Office's on the other side of the island for my business.

I can see your challenges from a shipping standpoint...does the PO Box at least give you semi-controlled delivery environment? Man I love the weather in the Pacific...

Definitely would not warrant throwing them out! If anything your AA% might drop a bit, but probably not. I would brew a simple batch that you have done before to get a check on how well the hops traveled and then adjust your AA% if you need to next brewday.
