The first thing you should do is allay or confirm those suspicions. Spring the $25 to get the Ward Lab's analysis done. Water recipes aren't all they are cut out to be and you can't taylor your water to match a particular recipe if you don't know what's in it when you start. Of course if you are willing to buy RO or other low ion content water or install the equipment what's in your tap doesn't matter. OTOH you may be wasting money replacing water which is actually pretty good. But yes, there are recipes.
