Citra Dry Hop

Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:33 pm

I'm brewing an IPA loosely based on a scaled up version of Tasty's APA this weekend. I have heard that Citra seems to impart some pretty harsh flavors in the boil, so I was thinking that my first encounter with it should be in the form of a dry hop. I'm planning on dry hopping with an oz of citra along with some amarillo and cascade for a 6 gallon batch for 6 or 7 days.

Has anyone dry hopped with Citra? If so, how much and what kind of flavors did you end up with?

Cheers

I agree. I've got an APA on tap now with .5oz Citra and Centennial at 15, .5 oz each at 5, .5 each at 0, and 1oz each dry hopped. Nothing but wonderful.

I have heard this horse piss as well about Citra not being a dual purpose hop but I recently made an IPA using the whole pound throughout the boil and dry-hopping, 10 gallon batch. Its wonderful, I've given it to many beer drinkers, brewers bar owners etc, and everyone loves it. It may not be everyones bag but all the feed back is great. I definately used a late hop method adding few hops as a traditional boil hop but crunched it in the end of the boil and on the cold side. I used three ounces per fermenter 75% thru primary fermentation and the aroma is thick and dank. Yummy Yummy

I brewed an all Citra IPA which has been in the bottle a month now. It's a good beer. It does impart a different type of bitterness IMHO that's a bit smoother if that makes sense.

I dry hopped a pale ale with 1 oz of citra and found it incredibly pungent. The tropical flavors and citrus to me kind of clashed and I didn't particularly enjoy it. That said, I took it right off the hops while it was still a little green and entered it in the hudson valley homebrew competition, a smaller regional comp. It took first place in the comp, so other people liked it more than I did.

It's been about a month now and the intensity has died down a bit. I really enjoy it now. I think it's a much better beer and wish I'd decided to enter it in the nationals.

I did a Janet's Brown. Dryhopped 1 keg with the Centennial and the other keg with Citra. The Citra is far better IMO. I also did a wheat with 56 IBU from Magnum and Citra at flameout. I used some carawheat to balance out the bitterness. It had a nice, almost fruity, hop nose that really went well with the wheat. The first 5 gallons only made it a week. The second keg is for a festival. Hope it makes it.
