Carapils Dextrin vs Malto Dextrin

Tue Feb 02, 2010 8:45 am

Ok, so I think I flubbed up my recipe a bit. Attempted to make Janet's Brown and assumed the Dextrin listed in the recipe was the same as using Malto Dextrin. I've never used either, so I chalk it up to learning curve.

A.) Wondering if 1.25 lbs of Malto-Dextrin is going to make this overly sweet now.

B.) what is the correct conversion to use if I'm going to use Malto-Dextrin instead of Carapils Dextrin? I've seen packages marked as 8oz / 5 gal and 4oz / 5 gal, which is it, if either?

I doubt it's going to be that big of a difference, I remember the wort being hoppier than I had expected so it's probably still going to be very good beer.

I don't know what the conversion factor is, but in a typical 5 gallon extract batch, a cup full of maltodextrin powder is PLENTY to boost mouth feel and body. I'd say that that's probably in the ballpark with a lb or so of Carapils.

Now, if you added a lb and a quarter of malto dextrin, you'll probably have a "crazy bitch" beer -
a really thick body, but nonstop head-

Carapils is a grain that needs to be mashed for conversion. Malto Dextrin is a powder. Both have essentially the same goal in mind (mouthfeel and body) but accomplish it in different ways.

I usually see 4-8oz of Malto Dextrin thrown around and up to 5% of Carpils. In many recipes, those should be similar percentages (8oz is 5% of 10lbs).

All that being said, 1.25lbs of Malto Dextrin sounds like a lot. Your beer might not be ruined, but it will certainly be "different."

Promash: 1.25 of carapils at 70% efficiency will add .005 gravity to a 6 gallon batch, while 1.25 of maltodextrin will add .008.

You won't taste .003 sg of unfermentables. RDWHAHB.
