Grain Storage - Volume Per Pound Estimates?

Hey,

I'm looking at storing 6 gallon HDPE buckets with a Gamma liid on them. Does anyone know a rough estimate for how many gallons of volume 50 lbs of grain might take up (assume the grain is base malt)? A simple gallons per lbs conversion. I'm trying to gauge how many buckets I'll need to accomodate a sack or two of base malt that's in my near future.

I store my grain in old crappy corny kegs, takes almost two of them for a 50lb sack.

Very nearly 5# per gallon for barley. Wheat is a little heavier.

A gallon of Maris Otter of unknown, but presumably nominal, moisture content weighed 4.92 lbs and a gallon of Weyermann's Pils 4.64 so 0.2 - 0.215 gal per pound should serve for barley malt. A gallon of Weyermann's wheat malt came in at about 5.5 lbs so 0.18 gal/lb should do for wheat. Rice hulls OTOH.....

I store my grain in a cheap plastic containers I've picked up a Home Depot. One 55 lb. sack fits into a medium size and two in a large. I have been know to break up a sack into large zip top bags in 5 pound increments, but sometimes I just keep it in the sack and measure batch by batch.

I use plastic totes as well. I have found that a 16 gallon tote will hold 60 pounds of 2 row w/ no problem.

I can get a 50 or 55 lb sack of grain in two 5 gallon icing buckets (free at the bakery!). 50 lb goes in easy. 55 lb takes a little shaking to settle the grain before I can close the lids.

The volume calc I use is 3L = 4 lbs, or 25 1/4 oz (vol) per lb. for loose pack 2 row (notice how I abuse three measurement systems in one sentence ).
