Major screwup...

I bought grains the other day, and I guess I was spacing out. The recipe called for 2 oz. of Black Patent... I added 2 lbs. Used the wrong damn scale.

Any ideas for what to do with it. Someone suggested to me that I should cut it in half, and add a bunch of base malt and make a heavy stout. Anyone got a good idea?

Nah, it's a good learning tool. It sounds like you haven't brewed it yet, have you? If you have, what style were you brewing? I would just let it ferment out and see what it tastes like. Then brew a pale ale and blend it in. It would be a great experiment.

If you only bought grains, don't sweat it. I think that the advice to add base malts is a good one. If you post your recipe, we could help you tweak the new recipe. (And we could have Professor Jamil instruct us in a case study)

Send it to me. An Imp Stout that I brewed came up shy on the dark malts side! Now I'm figuring out how to correct that one.

If it's brewed already, I think you'll have to blend it. It can get really sharp with more than .5lb of BPatent in a 5 gallon batch.

I would carefully dig through the bag. The patent should be somewhat seperate. Take out as much as you can and brew what's left. Don't be afraid to get some base grains along with it; the goal is to get that patent out. Add back base grains to get to your original weight and brew. You'll miss enough black patent to make up the two oz. At that low level, it's mostly for color anyway, so it doesn't matter much if you only have 1 or 2 oz of patent in the final grist.

If it's mixed really well, I'd probably just throw it all out. It's $10 or $12 of grain at the most. No sense wasting your time and yeast on a beer that's going to suck. If you cut it by doubling the base, you'll spend another $10 or $12 and have two beers you don't really want.
