New hop rhizomes in the Ground!

Tue Apr 04, 2006 11:24 am

New rhizomes from freshops.com arrived last Saturday. 3 each of Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Nugget. Planted them on Sunday, just in time for the torrential rains that are now pounding the SF Bay Area. The new rhizomes will either love all that moisture, or hate it.. Either way, I figure it's better to get them started now than to wait 2 weeks.

The old vines that I had from last year are starting to show a little bit of new growth. It's still too early to tell if they'll make it or not.

Anyone insane enough to try growing their own grains? It's unrealistic to even think that you'll get enough unless you have a couple acres of the stuff, but, in the interest of getting to know all of the ingredients as much as possible, I'd like to experiment with growing a few handfuls. It's amazing to me how tough/impossible it seems to be to find seeds for north american 2-row varieties such as Harrington.

I wouldnt grow any barley in my backyard since its already planted with hops and I would never get around to malting the grain. I have thought of having a several acres planted on the family farm back in Missouri and getting someone to malt the lot for me.
