Retail pricing: 63.99 US dollars for a 55lbs sack + shipping

Yikes, that's about 50% more expensive!

Yep, which really sucks because it is a really nice base malt with a wonderful flavor.

My point exactly for starting this discussion topic. There has to be a way to produce the same wonderful flavor with our American malts. That British stuff is just too bloody expensive by the time it gets all the way to California.

That's a shame, because you're right it's bloody lovely stuff! Stick your head in a bag of it and you just know it's going to make great beer. I'll count myself extremely lucky then!

So, do they not grow it in the US at all?

I think the problem is two fold, the growing of it, this variety of grain may not do well under our climate and there may be issues with the US department of agriculture on the importation of the seed for growing purposes, I can't reallys see this as the malt has been around for like 40 years. Also, from what I have read the variety is a lower yeild then many of the newer varieties. So it could partially be a bang for the buck kind of thing. As most of the US argiculture industry is built on providing the best yeild. So they Opt for the newer higher yeilding 2-Row vareities.

I think the bigger problem is that most of the more famous producers of Marris Oter floor malt it. Which I don't think many US Maltsters are interested in as floor malting is considerably more labour intensive.

I'm with Cliff, if your brewing on a budget brew less and use the grain you want , after all were not brewing to save money on beer. Marris Otter is a great base. Try Great Western Pale Ale Malt (3L) This Malt is slightly more kilned than the GW domestic 2- Row has a little more color and taste a little drier. The cost is about half of MO. If your really on a budget quit brewing and start drinking PBR.

I think maybe my point has been missed. It's OK though, I have enough information now to go forward with my experimenting.

Thanks to all.

Holt, I can clearly see your not Brewing on the cheap, with that line up of beautiful bottles. I was making A funny. I got your point, really, try Great Western Pal Ale Malt. I mix about 50/50 MO,and GW it makes a nice biscuity dry malt fiavor. How far do you live from Riverside? More Beer up here(Concord) has a 15% off sale twice a year at the showroom. You make the order in adavance and pick -up at the showroom. Marris Otter At current price is $62.70 a sack. At 15% off $53 for 55 pounds. .96 per Lb. not bad... Store your sack in a plastic Bag in a trash can and your good to go. I,m assuming you have a mill (doesn,t everybody have a mill) if not check out the 'Monster Mill'.
Anyway, Good Brewing MK
