I keep StarSan around for a year...

Sat Nov 04, 2006 10:59 pm

I keep a corny keg full of Star-San around. I've used the same keg for over a year now, the pH is ~2.7, and I have yet (knock on wood) to have an infection. Sometime I probably will throw it out and make a new 5-gal just due to paranoia, but 1 year on 1 oz (?) of starsan concentrate makes for a pretty economical sanitizer.

How long will the concentrate last? I bought the 32 oz bottle and have only used 2 oz in the last four months.

As long as the MIXED PH is below 4 it is good.

Pretty much indefinitely. Just keep it somewhat cool (no need to refrigerate) and out of the sun. I have been working on the same 32 ounce bottle for 2 years now. I may have to get me another sometime next summer.

I keep my mixed starsan in a keg. When you use distilled or RO water to make it up, it will keep for months and months.

Do you pour the star san you used for a days brew back into the cornie and use it again?

I pour mine back in (acutally, usually siphon because the paint tray is hard to hold and pour without spilling) as long as it is still clear and not full of bugs or anything.

I keep an old Windex bottle full of solution in my holster when brewing. Everything that moves and most of the things that dont get a squirt whenever they get near wort. I refill the bottle every 6 months or so.

I used to keep a bright yellow translucent spray bottle like that. Then last brew session it fell off the table, and instead of doing the nice plastic bounce like I expected, it shattered! Boo hoo!
