Weird things to Randalise??

Mon Oct 25, 2010 1:48 pm

What is the weirdest thing you have ever used in a Randal?

I'll be doing an event soon where we want to be able to try a whole bunch of weird, wonderful and freaky stuff out in a randal.

So if wasting a bit of beer and ingredients wasn't an issue for you... What things would it be kinda cool to try in a randal, just to see what the hell happens.

Some suggestions to get you started

Lemon grass
Ginger root
Peppercorns
A truffle
Rose petals
Prunes
Cardamom pods
Hibiscus flowers
Cinnamon sticks
Ume (salted plums)
Toasted oak chips
Smoked oak chips
Kaffir lime leaves
Bay leaves
Jelly beans
Coca nibs
Ancho chili
Leather chips
Tobacco
Various citrus zest
Bacon
Various fresh fruit, Im thinking halved passionfruit!

That sort of thing... If you think of something a bit out there weird and maybe cool, even if you aren't convinced it would actually be nice... Cut and paste the list and add it to the bottom.

That'd be really helpful

Cheers

I would definitely cross tobacco off the list. That one would be toxic in addition to tasting like crap. Likewise leather depending on how it was tanned.

A month or so back I had a wonderful homebrew watermelon wheat that was run through a randall filled with fresh watermelon. That one was definitely a good idea.

Crushed cranberries or slightly cracked coffee beans would be good additions to the list.

Awww, c'mon - if chewing tobacco doesn't send people straight to hades, then surely half a Cuban in a Randal isn't going to do for anybody?

I see your point with the leather though, Ill see if I can find something all naturally and non toxically tanned.

Coffee beans on the list. Cheers.

Had a wheat beer once that had been run through a Randall stuffed with strawberries and kiwi fruit. Not bad.

(Maybe a few of you guys remember this) At NHC in Oakland, WAHA took 2 espresso machines, and packed one bowl with hops, the other with coffee. We ran an IPA through the hops, and an oatmeal stout through the coffee. We'd refill the bowl after about 4 or 5 beers. Both were great and eveyone seemed to like them. The biggest issue was the oatmeal stout really foamed up, so we poured into pitchers and let them settle a little before serving.

I am far from an expert on this but if I remember right the problem with the tobacco was alcohol solubility. The alcohol draws near lethal levels of nicotine out of the leaves.
